Sheera with Banana (Suji Halwa)

I learnt this recipe from my mother. The addition of a ripe banana gives it an different flavor. Sheera tastes just as good without it. Some form of Sheera is made in every part of India. Yesterday I was planning on making matar karanji and needed something sweet to balance it. I had a ripe banana on hand so decided to make Sheera.

You will need
1 cup semolina
1 tbsp. ghee
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup milk (I used 1%)
1 cup water
4 cardamom
1 banana (optional)

Heat the ghee in a flat pan and add the semolina. On low medium heat sauté the semolina until it is cooked through. If you pick up a pinch it will not stick to your fingers.

If you are planning on using the banana, chop it into small pieces and add it to the semolina.

Combine water with milk and bring it to a boil. Add it to the semolina. Ensure the heat is low and watch for splatter. Cover and let it cook for a couple minutes. Remove cover and mix together. Repeat two more times. Add sugar.

Mix the sugar in.

The melting sugar will allow you to mix everything together. Add the cardamom powder and mix well. Serve hot.
