Spinach Gomaae

Blanched spinach served with a sesame seed sauce garnished with roasted sesame seeds. I made this dish in a very very small quantity because I did not know if we would be able to eat it. Ability to eat spinach in this form is an acquired taste.

Since this small quantity was made as part of a Japanese meal we were able to mix it in the rice and finish it.

Recipe adapted from here
You will need
a handful of spinach
1 tbsp. sesame seeds, roasted and ground
1 tsp. soy sauce
1 tsp. sugar
1 tbsp. sesame seeds, roasted for garnish

Boil water in a pan. Add the spinach and let it cook for a minute. Remove the blanched spinach and drain. Meanwhile, mix the sesame powder with the soy sauce and sugar.
Cut the drained spinach into pieces, squeeze the water out completely and combine with the sesame seed mixture. Sprinkle with roasted sesame seeds and serve.

  1. Super simple and super healthy dish -- this is probably why Japanese live longer!!!

  2. I made something similar for Korea. I liked that version am sure will like this too. We love spinach in any form.

  3. here in indian japanese restaurants they have started deep frying the spinach and then mixing it w ith the rest of the ingredients, it is a big hit ...i think it works that way for our palette

  4. I love spinach and sesame seeds. So this one goes to the bookmarks a well :)

  5. dry spinach has different texture but love the flavor profile

  6. Japanese cuisine looks very simple in flavors like our NE cuisine!! :) Looks colorful!! :)
